Global Transformation and Governance Challenges
After two decades of post-9/11 Western and international engagement in Afghanistan, foreign military troops withdrew in August 2021 and left behind many Afghans who are now facing an uncertain future under the re-installed Taliban regime. This moment calls for a reflection on what the lessons from Afghanistan mean for the future of the theory and policy practice of core issues related to war, peace and justice.
This two-day conference seeks to bring together scholars, civil society representatives, and policy-makers to contribute to a comprehensive exchange about military and political intervention in the region, not only from a Western perspective, but also from regional and Afghan perspectives. We invite contributions that discuss the implications for the study of, inter alia, military intervention, comprehensive approaches to peacebuilding (local and external approaches), development, good governance, democratisation, the promotion of human rights (including the cross-cutting women, peace and security agenda), migration, geopolitical implications and the role of NATO, the EU and bilateral/multilateral approaches. We also invite policymakers, practitioners, and civil society representatives to draw on successes and failures to develop concrete suggestions for future policy improvements in the fields related to the above-mentioned topics.
Each conference day will feature panels on distinct themes. The conference will conclude with a Policy-Scholar Nexus round-table. The goal is to create a knowledge network and to produce two major publications with selected contributions (a Special Issue or Forum and an Edited Volume).
Call for Papers and Policy Think Pieces
The organizers invite contributions from both early career and senior scholars as well as from members of civil society groups and policymakers in the form of a short paper (no longer than 2000 words) and/or think piece of the same length, addressing one or more of the issues outlined above with a view to contribute to a comprehensive review of 20 years of international engagement in Afghanistan and to recommendations for research and policies related to war, peace and justice.
